Hi Hans

The Hawea River Track has only been constructed to the bridge from lake Hawea. The route from the bridge to SH6 currently uses the existing 4WD access road. The Trust did scope a route from the bridge skirting the edge of the campground, and passing close to the southern toilet on the site. This was not pursued at the time for the following reasons
The reserve had transferred from DOC management to QLDC management and QLDC were preparing a new management strategy for the reserve. Until this was agreed it didn’t make sense to create a track within the reserve that didn’t match the plan.
Costs for this section was included in our original funding applications, and it was not easy to raise further funds until a management plan was in place

QLDC are currently asking for submissions on a draft management plan for the reserve – this would be the ideal time for you to raise your concerns direct with QLDC and have some input into the reserve and campground management.
The Trust will be making a submission and will suggest a track alignment similar to our original ideas.

However – I would point out that as there is vehicle access to the Hawea River Bridge, it is inevitable that people will drive to that point to use the track and that track users usually follow “desire lines” which is the most direct route. Therefore a route that diverts around the campground may not be as effective as you may wish it to be.
I guess the increased use of the reserve reflects the increasing population in the Upper Clutha and the new recreational opportunities that are being developed.

If you want your views heard – make a submission on the draft reserve management plan – details are available at the QLDC office in Wanaka and I suspect at the library.

Regards

Before construction of this track was commenced, I asked the QLDC and Upper Clutha Tracks Trust if the camping area on the Hawea river was to be affected, I was told that the track would go below the camping area and it would not be affected. What a lie. The track clearly runs right through the campsite meaning a constant stream of walkers and cyclists for lovers of summer camping in this previously quiet and peaceful area. Not against the track, but there could have been a more thoughtful route.

Hi Liz

The track is quite slippery where the base is clay. It has been exceptionally wet recently, and we hope it will settle down. The track is now being managed by DOC who will keep an eye on it and may gravel some sections if it proves necessary. The problem we face is do we build 1km of all weather track that is high spec or 10km of track that can be used 90% of the time? At the moment our view is to go for the latter - monitor it and improve sections if it proves necessary.

Thanks for the feedback!

great track but very dangerous on a damp day as clay makes it so slippery ..... dropping fine gravel on the track would be a huge benefit

Hi Tony

sorry for the delay in replying. The track is not currently a through route due to a delay in the short middle section being built by the Otago Regional Council.
Contact me on info@uctt.org,nz for more up to date info nearer the time you plan to walk it.
Approx times are
Wanaka I-site to Waterfall creek ( and road access of Mt Aspiring Rd) - 40-60 min - open
Waterfall Creek to Ironside trig - 40 mins - open
Ironside Trig to Damper Bay- approx 30-40 mins estimate - under construction
Damper Bay to new car park on Mt Aspiring Rd - 40-60 mins - open
Car Park to Glendhu Bay camp ground - 10 mins - open

Regards

Greetings,
Could you please advise if the Millennium Track is walkable from Wanaka right through to Glendhu Bay.
If so approx times from Wanaka to Waterfall Bay, Waterfall Bay to the last road exit (Name of Road?) and finally from there to Glendhu Bay.

My wife and I are leading a tour in February which will walk part or all this track, depending on times and conditions. They will not be fast walkers as they will want to stop and admire the scenery as well as take numerous photogaphs.

Thank you
